International Women's Day Celebration 2016 by Women Techmakers Sri Lanka

Women Techmakers Sri Lanka held their first International Women’s Day celebration event with Google Developer Group (GDG) Sri Lanka on 12th of March 2017 with 87 women participants from 9.30 am to 3.00 p.m. All the registered participants were women and the men on the floor were our invitees and GDG organizers only. This was my first ever experience as a Women Techmakers lead.
We started our event at 9.30 am by Giving an Introduction about Women Techmakers and International Women's Day. The introductory session was ended by playing the greeting’ video sent us by Chelle Obligacion-Gray who is a Community Manager - APAC, Developer Ecosystem Team at GooglAPAC. Then we had a motivation speech by an invited female speaker (Ms.Oshana Dias, Vice President Human Resources at Brandix i3). Then it was time for an icebreaker which was to build an android bot. We asked them to form teams according to colour cards we gave them initially and provided all necessary materials to build the robot. The team who became first received gifts.
The second speech was also an experience sharing session by an invited female speaker (Ms.Sandra De Zoyza, Group Chief Customer Officer at Dialog Axiata PLC). Then women techmakers leads, GDG organizers and the invited speakers came to the front to cut a cake and to celebrate the IWD and initiation of Women Techmakers community Sri Lanka under GDG Sri Lanka. Then we had a tech talk on Firebase which was conducted by an invited male speaker (Mr.Kasun Delgolla, Senior Software Engineer at WSO2). Then we had refreshments and networking session.
After refreshments, we requested participants to sit in teams again and gave them 2 questions and asked to come up with solutions by using at least one google product. Then each group presented the solution within 2 minutes in front of a judge panel. After that we had a session with Google Business Group(GBG) Colombo. It was a very interactive session and they distributed t shirts and  also note books among participants. Finally the winners of the app solutions were announced by the judge panel and the session was concluded with the vote of thanks.
As our goal of the event was to ‘Empower the new comers to the tech industry and to develop the network of Sri Lankan tech and business women professionals in tech industry’, we focussed on more team activities to let them get connected with each other.
